Chiropractic and heel spurs

Calcification under the heel at the plantar fascia tendon attachment is the most common cause of heel spurs. Not everyone will be bothered by this, but research has shown that about 10% of all people have experienced it.

Causes of heel spurs

  • Overload
  • Unbalanced load (e.g. bad shoes)
  • Foot abnormalities (flat foot or hollow foot)
  • Being overweight
  • Nerve tightness in the painful area

Heel spur due to sports

Many sports where there is a high load on the foot carry the risk for the development of heel spurs ie. running, basketball and volleyball. The chance of developing heel spurs is much higher when doing high impact sports that are unusual to the individual. Sports such as swimming and cycling have a low risk, since the load on the foot is much lower.

Heel spur symptoms

  • Pain when walking
  • Pain after sitting still, especially under the foot
  • Pain when the foot is in an unnatural position ie. while driving a car

Heel spur treatment
It is important that you get help quickly if the diagnosis of heel spur has been made. First of all, the chiropractor locates the area of pain, possibly with the help of ultrasound. Heel spur is treated with shockwave therapy combined with chiropractic techniques. The ankle is manipulated so that the ankle joint regains normal freedom of movement. The calf and foot muscles are also treated to release the tension.

Shockwave on heel spurs

With shockwave therapy, the cause of the pain can be treated directly at the origin. Without medication or surgery. After identifying the source of the pain and the painful area, the injury is exposed to short shockwave impulses. You will hear a clear click and feel powerful impulses at the treatment area. These impulses promote tissue metabolism and blood circulation in the painful area. In this way, the recovery mechanism of the body is stimulated and the pain will be greatly reduced.
