Chiropractic and Headache / Migraine

Pain can be compared to a smoke alarm that sounds when there is a fire. It is a biological warning system that informs us when there is a problem somewhere in our body. While it is common to take painkiller medications to decrease the pain it is important to realize that these medications do not affect the cause of the problem, they merely turn off the pain signal. This can be compared to removing the batteries from a smoke detector: the alarm stops but the fire continues to burn.

Some common complaints associated with headaches and migraines are:

  • Neck pain
  • Pain from whiplash injuries
  • Facial pain
  • Jaw problems

Various presentations of headache

Headaches affect all ages. They can be of short or long duration, from minutes to weeks. There are many different types af headache classifications such as Tension headache, Migraine headache and cluster headaches. Headaches can also be felt in various locations such as the back of the head, the temples or behind one or both eyes or generally in the head. It can also cause generalised weakness, tiredness and affect general function. Ultimately pain is a signal sent by our body to warn us that something is amiss, and that something should be done about it.

Causes

Research science tells us that excessive physical and psychological stress causes a reduction in neck mobility. This leads to nerve irritation and muscle spasm and possibly even constriction of arteries. Thus results in decreased oxygenation of the brain and pain is merely a signal of this. Another possible cause is a neck sprain or strain injury from a fall, whiplash or poor posture. This changes the alignment of the neck vertebrae.

Symptoms
Headaches often originate in the neck and then refer to the head. People often feel it 'moving up' into the head. Neck muscles are tense and tight. Headaches can also be experienced as a pressure above or behind one or both eyes.

Migraine
Migraines are a kind of headache that is caused by a combination of 2 factors. Initially, there is a constriction of blood vessels to the brain. This leads to a compensatory widening of the arteries which then causes a migraine. It is often traced back to spinal dysfunction which has a negative effect on the neurological system. It is often associated with nausea, vomiting, dizziness and sensitivity to light. Duration can vary from hours to days. Migraine sufferers often seek bedrest in a dark and quiet room.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic therapy was established more than 100 years ago. The treatment is concerned with function and dysfunction of the locomotor system and is effect on the neurological system. A chiropractor assesses spinal function for restrictions or immobility. By thoroughly examining the spine and specifically treating areas of restriction normal function is restored. This allows the nervous system to function normally and the body can heal itself without interference.

The first visit

  • Intake
A patient questionnaire is filled in followed by a discussion with the chiropractor in order to establish a thorough case history.
  • Examination
    Chiropractic tests
    Neurological test
    Orthopaedic test
  • X-ray, MRI, IDXA
    Whichever is indicated necessary
  • Diagnosis
    Given by the Chiropractor
  • Treatment
Nearly always already on the first visit
Chiropractic treatment

Chiropractors are specialists in examining and identifying dysfunctional movements and restrictions of the spinal column and nervous system. Thus the cause of the problem is identified. Chiropractic treatment frequently resolves headaches and migraines. The aim of the treatment is to improve faulty movement patterns and postures, improve mobility in the vertebral column and restore normal neurological function. The treatment is centred on correcting spinal mobility through specific pressure on spinal joints using hands-on techniques. This leads to more free movement of the joints and less pain.

Once a satisfactory treatment outcome is reached, the Chiropractor will often advise regular maintenance and preventative treatment. Regular maintenance care of the spinal column reduces the chances of recurring episodes of pain and ensures optimal mobility for the patient.

FAQ

What are the cracking noises during treatment?
During treatment the Chiropractor will adjust spinal joints and this is often associated with a cracking noise. This is caused by pressure changes in the joint and its effect on gasses in the synovial fluid. Air is released briefly in the joint with a release of energy and a cracking sound. It has nothing to do with bones moving over one another or ligaments tearing.

Why must I continue treatment when I feel good?
Similar to going to the dentist even when you don't have tooth pain, the focus of treatment moves to prevention and maintenance. By maintaining and optimizing the spinal column you will feel more supple and mobile and you will prevent painful conditions.

Tips to prevent pain
  • don't sleep on the stomach, it puts undue tension on the neck joints and muscles.
  • sleep on an orthopaedic pillow instead of a overly thick pillow.
  • be aware of your posture.
  • partake in regular physical activity in order to stimulate blood circulation
  • minimize stressful situations as much as possible
  • relax! Take a nice walk for example.
  • identify if you have any food sensitivities or allergies. Certain foods are known to cause migraines or headaches in certain people such add cheese, chocolate or wine.
Tips to relieve pain
  • use a cold pack over the head or neck. Place ice blocks in a towel or a plastic bag and apply for up to 10 minutes with 2 hour breaks in between.
  • massage of the neck and shoulder muscles often relieves headaches and migraines by reducing tension.
  • lie in a quiet and dark room with a small towel or pillow under the neck so that the head had less pressure on it.

Finally
Instead of constantly taking medications consult a chiropractor for a specific diagnosis and treatment plan for headaches and migraines.
