History of chiropractic

125 years of Chiropractic

In 1895, D.D. Palmer, an American healer, gave Harvey Lillard, a janitor in the building where he had his office, a treatment. Lillard turned deaf years earlier due to an accident. Due to treatment by Palmer delivered to the upper part of the spinal column, he started hearing again. Although Chiropractic is not the cure for all deafness, it was the beginning of the discovery that the spine has a big influence on our health. D.D. Palmers son, B.J. Palmer, continued his father’s theory and developed the art and science of Chiropractic to a university degree and thus Chiropractic was born.

How it developed in the Netherlands

The first chiropractor came to The Netherlands in 1968. At the moment there are over 300 registered chiropractors in our country. As more and more people turning to Chiropractic care for help with musculoskeletal problems, the number of chiropractors in The Netherlands has rapidly increased culminating in the formation of the NCA (Netherlands Chiropractic Association). This regulatory body ensures public safety by maintaining strict membership criteria for prospective chiropractors wanting to work in the Netherlands, and setting up standards for continuing education programmes and rules of professional conduct of all members.
